Wisdom teeth are the last teeth in the mouth. Since they are in an area that is difficult to reach and see, brushing and maintenance can be more difficult than other teeth. Due to insufficient brushing, wisdom teeth easily rot, causing toothache and bad breath.
In some cases, wisdom teeth cannot come out due to the lack of space in the jaws. They can remain fully embedded (not visible in the mouth under both the gingiva and jawbone), or they can remain semi-buried under the gingiva and become associated with the oral environment. In this case, they cause food to be stuck and accumulate in the area where they come out of the gingiva, causing infection. This picture, which causes swelling and redness in the gingiva around the 20-year-old tooth, severe pain spreading to the neck and ear, swelling of the lymph nodes, pain during mouth opening and swallowing, is called pericoronitis. Fully impacted wisdom teeth can compress the front teeth and create crooked teeth. In addition, they can cause decay of this tooth by putting pressure on the adjacent tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth, which have not been noticed for many years, can cause serious problems by causing large cysts in the jaw. Even if it does not cause any problems, wisdom teeth may need to be extracted for orthodontic treatment in order for the other teeth to line up properly.
For such reasons, wisdom teeth should only be extracted with local anesthesia by anesthetizing the area.
Teeth that have not erupted when they should have erupted are called impacted teeth.
Wisdom teeth, canines and premolars can also be impacted. When it is determined that they cannot be replaced orthodontically (with braces), they should be pulled out by the maxillofacial surgeons in the same way.
Spitting, brushing teeth, vigorous shaking, using a straw or gargling should not be done on the first day after extraction. In the first two days, warm, granular and soft foods should be consumed. Antiseptic mouthwashes recommended by the doctor should be used after each food consumption and tooth brushing. Pain relievers and, if recommended, antibiotics should be used regularly. You should not smoke for the first 48 hours, as it will impair the healing process.
After the fast and adequate surgery, there is not much pain and the pain is easily controlled with mild painkillers.
Edema on the cheek varies a lot according to the condition of the tooth and from person to person. In order to prevent swelling, a cold pack (ice compress) should be applied to the cheek area for the first 24 hours. Slight swelling is normal and necessary for healing.
