Which teeth whitening method is right for me?

If your teeth are already close to white and you would like them a few shades lighter, laser whitening or at-home whitening alone may be enough.

However, if your teeth have darkened significantly due to smoking, coffee or tea, combined whitening will be the most effective and efficient option for you. An examination is essential so that we can decide which whitening method suits you best.

What causes tooth discoloration?

  • Natural (physiological) discoloration that continues throughout life
  • Discoloration following amalgam fillings
  • Antibiotic use during infancy
  • Antibiotic use during pregnancy
  • Discoloration from within the tooth related to root canal treatment
  • Surface staining caused by coffee, tea, tobacco, red wine and long-term use of mouthwashes
  • Discoloration caused by bleeding inside the tooth when the living tissue (pulp) dies after trauma

Frequently Asked Questions

An impression of your mouth is taken and custom-fitted whitening trays are made for you. A measured amount of whitening gel (10–15% carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) is then applied inside these trays.

Yes. Biological teeth whitening can be used for people with sensitive teeth. The ingredient that causes sensitivity during whitening is hydrogen peroxide. Biological whitening gel contains only a very low concentration of it, and because the gel also contains enamel crystals, it helps treat the sensitivity at the same time.

The treatment takes an average of 10–15 days if the tray is worn for at least 4–6 hours during the day, or 8–10 days if it is worn overnight while you sleep.

As with other whitening methods, after biological whitening you should avoid coloured drinks such as tea, coffee and wine, acidic drinks such as cola, and tobacco products, especially during the first two weeks. Otherwise the whitening effect may fade early.

With at-home whitening, it is important not to use more gel than instructed. Excess gel can overflow from the tray and irritate your gums. If this happens, rinse your gums immediately, apply a cream containing vitamin E to the irritated area and contact your dentist.

It is used for teeth that have changed colour after root canal treatment. The filling in the tooth is removed, whitening gel is placed in the opening, and the tooth is then sealed with a temporary filling. Sessions are repeated at 3-day intervals until the desired shade is achieved.

This is a whitening method carried out at the dental clinic. It is a good choice for patients who are short on time, as the treatment is quicker than other methods. The dentist applies whitening gel to the teeth and activates it with UV light or a laser; the whitening takes about 1 hour on average. It is also known as “laser teeth whitening”.

If the root canal filling is very well sealed, it is generally harmless.

Combined whitening uses both in-office and at-home whitening together. After the in-office or in-clinic session, the treatment is reinforced with 2–3 days of at-home whitening.

Whitening may cause some mild tooth sensitivity, for example to air or to very hot or cold foods and drinks. This is a normal, expected side effect and usually settles within 24–48 hours. If anything unexpected occurs, be sure to contact your dentist.

This varies from person to person, but whitening takes 2–3 weeks on average. Greyish discoloration caused by antibiotic use is harder to whiten and may take longer to achieve results.

Teeth whitening uses whitening gels to break down and remove the coloured organic and inorganic substances that build up in the porous enamel and dentin of the teeth.

Yes. After each use, wash the trays with cold water and liquid soap, rinse them thoroughly and store them in the case provided.

The whitening effect gradually fades over time. Depending on how much coloured drinks (tea, coffee, wine, cola, etc.) you consume and whether you smoke, this takes between 6 months and 1 year. With 1 or 2 top-up sessions every 4–6 months, the results can be maintained long term.

During the whitening period and for 2 days afterwards, you must strictly avoid coloured drinks such as tea, coffee, wine and cola, as well as tobacco products. Otherwise the treatment can have the opposite effect and your teeth may become stained.

In laser teeth whitening, a laser is used to activate the whitening agent applied to the enamel surfaces and to shorten the treatment time.
